We Crawl Bears

Last year my roommate, her friend, and I were enrolled into this group workout program in a gym near our apartment and for almost nine months did training with a personal coach... Now if you're wondering about the results, all I can say is that while writing this I was wearing a red skirt that I last wore in 2008. Yeah! Baby!!! Hahaha! XD
But not to get too cocky, I still consider myself a little chubby so exercise remains in the itinerary for my unknown voyage through 2016. And by exercise I meant boxing training. Woo-hoo!!! ^^

Anyway, during those months of workout and shedding of tears, sweat, and blood... There was one exercise that my roommate and her friend despise the most. I mean if they could they'd avoid it like the plague. Hahaha! I'm talking about the "bear crawl" and as the name suggests, you get on all fours and walk like a bear. The only thing missing is the roar, but sadly you're not supposed to get that crazy at the gym. Shishishi! XD

After a while, my roommate's friend affectionately called our group the "Care Bears" since according to her, we look like actual bears when working out. My roommate loved the idea so much that she asked me to make amigurumi bears to represent each of us. Okay, first of all I don't completely agree that we should be called "Care Bears" 'coz we don't do the bear crawl upright nor do Care Bears do quadrupedal walking. So to correct the misnomer, I decided to use the actual walking position of a bear to make the amigurumis and call them
the We Crawl Bears. Obviously, I got the reference from the new show in Cartoon Network, We Bare Bears. It's about three bears trying to belong in the human world and if you ask me, are doing an awesome job at it. My fave is Ice Bear by the way. Hahaha! XD

We are the crawl bears and we always crawl,
But if given a choice, we'd rather walk tall.
Oh this we must do in the evenings at eight,
Just to burn all the calories we regretfully ate.
Down on all fours, forwards, backwards we go
What is that? Another set? Oh please, hell no!

Thank you! Thank you! I have a knack for poetry sometimes. Yes... Such words. Much rhyme. Very poem. Hahaha! XD

  5. I LOVE this pattern! The bears are soooo cute. I have a question for you though. Where you write 3inc, in the first line, how are you doing that increase? Are you expecting 2 single crochet in each of three stitches, or is there some other method you are using? Thanks so much for posting this lovely item for the world!

    1. Yes that's right, 3inc means doing inc stitches on each of the 3 stitches. ^^

You're very welcome. I'm glad that you love my pattern. ^^

  7. I am new to crochet and love these bears but need some help! How many do I chain for each body part to get started and what is mr?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Oh, you start with the chain technique. I'm familiar with that one but never really use it. I always start with a Magic Ring (MR).

Check this video if it helps:

If not, we'll figure something out. No worries. ^^

  8. Hi and I would like to first thank you for this free adorable pattern. I am going to make it for my great niece. Question : I don't find that yarn type. Is it a sport weight or a worsted weight? Could I make it with Red Heart?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You're very welcome. ^^

It's worsted weight and the only yarn I ever used. I guess you could experiment with another brand. The only difference I could tell you though is Monaco Yarn seems denser and less likely to unravel compared to Red Heart. Of course, that's just me. ^^

    2. Thank you. I'm confused with round 10 on the head and body of Pan Pan.

    3. Okay, in Rnd 10 you do 3sc then dec for 2 times, followed by 4sc, and like what you did at the beginning, except in reverse, you dec then 3sc for 2 times.

Is that clearer? Just give me a buzz if you're still having a hard time. ^^

  9. what type of beads are you using for the eyes? Are they the little jewelry seed beads? The only things I find around where I live are jewelry beads but they have little holes in them and I can't tell if yours have holes

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, they're jewelry beads and in the smallest size I could find. I just angled the beads (the holes facing sideways) and pressed it down firmly when gluing so the holes could be hidden in the folds of the yarn. ^^

  10. hello! very cute pattern and thanks for sharing! I would like to ask how to do this part?

    Rnd 10: [3sc-dec] 2x, 4sc, [dec-3sc] 2x (20)

i don't seem quite to get it :( thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. With Rnd 10 you do 3sc and dec (2sc together) for 2 times, then do 4sc, and finally, like the first one but in reverse, dec (2sc together) and do 3sc for 2 times. Was that clearer? ^^ If it's still unclear just give me a buzz and I'll try to come up with visuals. ^^

  13. I love this pattern. It is my first amigurumi. I have a few questions. What does FO mean? Should I stuff and close the body as soon as I'm done with it or wait until I put on the parts?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. FO means fasten off.

Yes, you can already stuff and close the body. No need to wait for the other parts. ^^

    1. Hi Hannah, I'm sorry to hear that but unfortunately I don't sell my amigurumis. I'm not thinking of turning this hobby into a business any time soon. Even if I did, I don't think this will only cost 2 or 3 dollars since it's an original pattern plus my labor fee. Also if we're not in the same country then shipping fees will be extremely expensive since this is not a bulk order. So for me, I find this more costly to buy than actually making it.

Do you need this for a gift? What country are you from? Because from where I am (Philippines), the best quality yarn (Monaco Brand) in my opinion costs less than a quarter dollar. If I'm not mistaken, I think they export their products to other countries.

I'm so sorry Hannah, I really wish I could help. T_T

  18. Hello, I wanna say thank u for the pattern, but I would like to know 2 things:
    1. How many centimeters or inches have the bears when they are finished?
    2. What hook do you used?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's pretty small and just a little bigger than my palm. I'd say it's about 5 inches long.

I used Susan Bates Silvalume Crochet hook 7 (4.5 mm). ^^

  19. Hi Duchess, I just wanna ask if what is the ply of the yarn that you used in this pattern? I'm familiar with the brand that you used but I don't know what sizes are available. Btw, your pattern is so adorable and this is what i am looking for! Hope I can make mine as pretty as what you had made. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's Monaco's standard 4ply acrylic fingering yarn. I think this is their only size. Well, they have another brand called Apple, but I've never seen one in stores. So the usual Monaco acrylic will be just fine. ^^

Of course you can make it as pretty or even better than mine. This pattern is free for everyone to recreate or experiment. Have fun with making your own cute bear. ^^

  20. Hi Duchess, first of all, this pattern is what I am looking for! I love watching this show that's why I decided to do this. Btw, I want to know what ply of yarn did you used for this one? I'm familiar with the brand that you used but i don't know what are the available sizes they have. Thankyou very much!

  22. Hello,
I just found this pattern and I think it is adorable! Only thing I do not understand is Rnd 6 of the head. "Rnd 6: 2sc, 8hdcinc, 2sc (20)" What does hdcinc mean? Do you have a suggestion for a YouTube video that might explain this? Also, what is the difference between hdcinc and hdc?
    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks so much! ^^

hdcinc means doing 2 half double crochets in a single stitch. Like an increase (inc) but done in half double crochet.

I found this video tutorial for visual reference:

  25. hi, I think this bears are adorable. I need help, please! I having a hard time understanding line 10[3sc-dec] 2x, 4sc, [dec-3sc] 2x (20) , I read a post about it, but still not clue after the 4sc. thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh right... It means you do 3sc and 1dec for 2 times, then 4sc, after that 1dec and 3sc for 2 times. If you add it all up the stitches should be 20.

Whenever you see a pattern enclosed in these: [] and have this "x", it means that you do the same pattern for a certain number of times. For example [1sc-dec] 3x; so you do 1sc and dec for 3 times.

I hope this helps. If you have further problems just give me a buzz. I don't mind the questions. ^^
