Princess Poppy

For my niece's birthday this year, I asked her which character I should crochet for her and she answered Princess Poppy. Aaw! She's old enough that I don't need to ask her mom what she wants. My baby girl's all grown up... Time flies so fast. Sob!
Anyway, my other choice for her was Moana, but I guess she prefers tiny colorful beings that can't stop singing, dancing, and hugging every hour. Sigh! Trolls. O_O Moana would've been nice, but Princess Poppy is what my precious niece ordered so what can I do?

Once again I needed the assistance of my favorite doll pattern for the base: Serah Basnet's Cookie doll pattern. Unlike my previous princesses, this one I had to do some major adjustments. It was quite the challenge and I'm so relieved I pulled through, and just in time too. Yup! Perty darn proud of myself. Huehuehue!

HAIR

(Wild Berry)
*Cut strands of Wild Berry that measures twice the body length of the doll
*Follow my often used hair tutorial to attach the strands on the hair cap
*Use the pet brush to turn the yarn into fine hair

Okay now this is the tough part; pet brushing the yarn so it'd be silky soft like Princess Poppy's actual hair in the movie. This took a lot of patience, concrete commitment, and arm muscle 'coz it wasn't a a piece of cake. Definitely not. I'm telling you now, this is one of the hardest project I ever made and it's not because of the pattern but because of this blasted hair. Actually, about halfway through I was about this close [----] to scrapping the doll and redoing the whole thing. Her hair was turning out into a nightmare; full of tangles and getting shorter the more I brush it out. Yah... Now you know why Poppy's supposedly long hair is cut a bit short. It was soooo unintentional. O_O I wanted it to be longer, but circumstances was such a jerk so I had to settle with pixie-haired Poppy. -_- Well, at least she still turned out adorable. I guess the universe was still that kind to me. Hehehe!

Does anyone know any technique that could pet brush yarn without getting it all tangled and resorting to emergency haircuts? I would love to hear any advice about this 'coz this took me in a whole new level of frustration.

HEAD BAND - FLOWERS (6x)

(Sapphire)
Once again I borrowed June Gilbank's posy blossom pattern to add flowers to Princess Poppy's head band.

I opted for the large blossoms, but if you want to change it up then it's totally okay.
My version is a little different from the actual Princess Poppy, but at least she still turned out cute. The short hair actually works on her. Sigh! Thank goodness. TvT

I was a little worried that my niece wouldn't like her since she's not an exact copy, but the moment I gave her the doll and her eyes lit up like stars I felt pretty darn proud of myself. I guess even with the erratic pauses from crocheting I was not able to lose my mojo. Yeah! I still got it. Phew! ^_^

  3. Thank you for sharing your pattern. It is working up so easy. My one question is about the hair cap....did you fill up the hair cap with strands of yarn or did you just do a couple of rows around the edge? Also did you attach the hair cap to the head before or after you got the hair all finished? Thank you in advance for your help. :)

    1. You're very welcome. I'm happy you liked this pattern.

I attached most of the yarn on top of the hair cap then just added a few on the sides just to fill in gaps.

Yes I attached the hair cap first on the head before putting in the strands and brushing it out. ^^

  6. Your poppy is adorable. I just finished one from a different pattern.... The hair was attached the way you did, however, each strand was then untwisted into the separate 4 strands of yarn. Then brushed out... It was a time consuming process but it wasnt a twisted mess.

    1. Oh sorry, I don't have a step-by-step tutorial on the eyes.

But what I did is spray lacquer on felt cloth to make it smoother to draw on, then sketched the eyes out with a pencil. It's better not to make mistakes since erasing can leave dark marks so try to practice on paper first. Then I used permanent marker to color the eyes. I sprayed another layer of lacquer afterwards. It's not permanent and the eyes will eventually fray after some time, but it'll last longer compared to not spraying a final layer.

Was that okay? I hope this helped. ^^
